Module 2
Active Listening
Listening is not waiting for your turn to talk. It is a set of observable behaviours you can practise — and it is the fastest way to make doctors, colleagues and patients feel understood.
Practise it
The Talker–Listener–Observer triad on the Activities page is the fastest way to build these behaviours. Pair it with the self-assessment below to find your focus area first.
A meta-analysis of decades of medical research found that how a clinician listens and communicates directly predicts whether patients follow the plan — and that these skills can be trained into people, not just born into them.6 For a field team, the same mechanism decides whether a doctor tries your device, trusts your follow-up, and calls you next time.

The objection behind the objection
A CRM specialist kept hearing “your price is high” from a hospital's biomedical lead and kept answering with discounts — which went nowhere. On the next visit she stopped pitching and asked, “What worries you most about switching?” The real issue surfaced: the last vendor's service response times had burned him. Price was a proxy for fear of downtime. She addressed the actual concern with an SLA and a local support contact, and won the account — no extra discount needed. The deal was unlocked by one question and the discipline to listen for the answer.

Two minutes of silence
An EP engineer trained himself to do one thing on every clinical visit: let the doctor finish completely, then paraphrase before responding. He described feeling the urge to jump in and holding it. Doctors started giving him more time, not less — because they felt understood. Within months he was the rep two key cardiologists asked for by name. Nothing about his product changed; his listening did.
